Cryptocurrency optimists have long touted bitcoin as an alternative to gold, and to some extent, this emergent market is indeed on the verge of surpassing gold. The total value of the cryptocurrency market is now more than $2 trillion, nearly equal to the amount of gold held for private investment purposes, according to a new report from Bernstein, a consultancy, released on Tuesday.
